Cables/pipelines and Natura 2000

The network of cables and pipelines in the bed of the Dutch section of the North Sea has expanded into a vast and complex web over the past decades. Continued expansion of the number of off-shore wind farms means that the network is increasing.

Where cables and pipelines cross protected areas, for instance the stretches to the landing points, they may cause disruption. That applies to the process of laying the cables and pipelines, maintenance and, later, clear-up. Depending on the type of habitat or the species to be protected and the nature of the work performed, such work is subject to conditions that form part of the management plans for Natura 2000 areas (now and in the future).
