Bij deze de eerste Wozep-nieuwsbrief van 2021 beginnen we meteen met twee nieuwtjes: dit is de eerste editie in het Nederlands én de laatste editie in de huidige stijl.

Dit jaar proberen we onze lezers vaker mee te nemen in de onderzoeken waarbij wij betrokken zijn, de kennis die we vergaren en de ontwikkelingen in de ecologie rondom wind op zee. Daarom werken wij aan een nieuw communicatieplan voor het programma. Dat plan rollen wij zorgvuldig uit. Om jullie  goed op de hoogte te houden zullen wij daarom ook via andere kanalen van ons laten horen.

In deze nieuwsbrief lees je over onderwatergeluid, de effecten hiervan op bruinvissen en de dataverzameling op zee, het wel en wee van de kleine mantelmeeuw én de ontwikkeling van een innovatieve meetmethode: dieren tellen in high definition.

This fourth Wozep newsletter brings you up to date with the latest news from Wozep research into the ecological impact of offshore wind farms. We take a closer look at the Sandwich tern and describe how porpoise strandings have been used to learn more about these elusive animals. We describe a new avenue of our bat research. And two articles focus on research programmes that have been launched recently to look at animals on the sea bed: one on the key role of the sand eel and the other on how the electromagnetic fields from cables can affect sharks and rays.

This third Wozep newsletter describes the latest progress and results of the Wozep research programme, which addresses the ecological impact of offshore wind farms. You can read about some of the spectacular fieldwork we have done during the last year or that is planned for the near future. It has been a busy season: we have been tagging seals, birds and bats, and tracking birds with the bird radar in the Luchterduinen wind farm.

This second Wozep newsletter describes the latest results of the Wozep research programme addressing the ecological effects of offshore wind farms. You can read about the population models for bird species that are vulnerable to the impact of offshore wind farms, and the stranding patterns of Harbour Porpoises on the North Sea coast. There is new information about the potential effects of wind farms on the ecosystem and, finally, you can learn more about the update of the framework for the assessment of the cumulative effects of offshore wind farms.

The Netherlands has ambitious plans for renewable energy. The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy is responsible for implementing the road map for offshore wind energy while ensuring that the impact on birds, bats and marine mammals remains within the acceptable levels set by the relevant legislation. Research is needed to understand the effects on protected species and habitats, and to develop the appropriate mitigation measures. The Ministry asked Rijkswaterstaat in 2016 to initiate a research programme (Wozep: the Dutch Governmental Offshore Wind Ecological Programme, 2016-2023) to develop knowledge in this field. This newsletter will be sent twice a year and will describe the research progress and latest insights.
